Earlier this week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its final regulation on Amalgam, a substance used in dental fillings.
Amalgam contains a combination of mercury and other elements such as tin, silver or copper and there were concerns that the mercury may seep out of the fillings and poison those with the alloy in their teeth.
However, the FDA expressed that Amalgam is safe and that the amounts of mercury that are released will not be harmful. Similarly, the American Dental Association (ADA) agreed with the FDA's move.
Dr John Findley, president of the ADA stated that "The FDA has left the decision about dental treatment right where it needs to bebetween the dentist and the patient" in that individuals can choose whether they want their dental care provider to use Amalgam.
To avoid tooth decay that may lead to cavities, the ADA recommends adults brush their teeth twice each day. In addition, it is advised that everyone floss and limit sugary or sticky snacks between meals, as well as choosing healthier alternatives such as crunchy vegetables to combat midday hunger.
