Going to the dentist can be a source of intense stress for those without adequate dental insurance to cover their treatment.
"Some insurance is so expensive, and they don't cover some of the things you need done," said Arysel Labaut in a report on WSMV Nashville. "Their co-pays are high, also."
Dentists at the Interfaith Dental Clinic said they think the tough economy is why they are seeing more and more patients who are coming in with dental emergencies.
"You're making a tough choice," said Dr. Rhonda Switzer of Interfaith Dental Clinic. "Do I pay the rent? Do I take care of my child's toothache? These are the problems that we are facing today."
The dentists are concerned due to the links between poor dental health and other adverse health outcomes.
"With advanced gum disease, we're seeing a link to diabetes, heart disease, stroke and also premature birth in mothers," said Switzer.
The clinic provides dental care to a small number of uninsured patients in emergency situations, but as a short term solution, according to the news source.
