Three University of Glasgow Dental School students have found a way to use the Nintendo Wii to possibly assist them in their career training.
Pearse Hannigan, David Lagan and Adam Gray, who are all final year students at the school, won the Dental Innovation Technology Ideas Award yesterday for using the wireless technology of the popular video game console to simulate a dental care operation with a virtual patient.
The award was the top prize in a competition that asked students to develop an "idea for a new piece of technology or innovation in the dental field," says the school.
Dr David Watson, who is from the university, said while there are simulation programs for students to practice their techniques, there was limited opportunity for them to practice outside of the school's lab.
"The use of Wii technology could be a really innovative and cost-effective solution which students could use to improve their manual dexterity," Watson said. "There is considerable research to back up the concept of using video games to improve dentists' coordination and the Wii-based application would complement the simulation technology already used in dental schools worldwide."
The students were presented with a check for £300 and a glass obelisk for their efforts.
