A dentist from Maine has begun a multi-part feature on a website where he advises senior citizens about how to maintain optimal dental health.
Dr. Jonathan M. Goss, writing for VillageSoup.com, posted the first part of his feature today and focused on issues such as dry mouth and how patients living with arthritis can still administer dental care.
According to Goss, some seniors can experience dry mouth from disease, changes in medication or certain cancer treatments. The condition makes it hard to swallow and speak. Goss recommended seniors afflicted with dry mouth drink lots of water and avoid sugary food products to combat the condition.
The dentist also suggested people who have difficulty with dental care because of arthritis look into a battery-operated toothbrush with a large handle, which can do most of the teeth cleaning work for them.
Finally, Goss recommended seniors schedule a dental checkup at least twice a year to ensure their mouth remains healthy. This can also assist seniors to avoid developing tooth decay which, if left untreated, can lead to serious conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
