Don't ruin Valentine's Day with poor dental care
Updated: 2/9/2009 5:00:20 PM

Don While maintaining dental health should be practiced regularly, people who have a date this weekend for the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday may want to step up their teeth cleaning to avoid having bad breath, which is a sure way to spend Saturday night alone in shame.

Though many people associate bad breath with eating garlic, smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol, poor dental care can also contribute to the condition.

Without brushing or flossing regularly, the buildup of food debris can create an unpleasant odor emanating from one's mouth, according to the American Dental Association. It can also be caused by plaque or gum disease.

Dr Ambigai Jeyabalan, a Glasgow dentist, said there is a simple way to determine how atrocious one's breath may be that does not involve asking a trusted friend or family member, AllMediaScotland.com reports.

"Lick the back of your wrist or the back of a spoon, let it dry and take a sniff," Jeyabalan said.

The doctor suggests people floss and brush their teeth prior to their date, as well as avoiding foods that may contain garlic, according to the article. Also, using sugar-free chewing gum or eating parsley can neutralize certain odors.
