A New York City dentist who can name major entertainment stars and well-known athletes as patients has released a list of common dental health mistakes for the public.
Dr Catrise Austin compiled the list for her upcoming book 5 Steps to an A-List Smile.
"Some of my clients and people I meet in public feel that they can take their smiles in their own hands and avoid going to the dentist. This is a terrible mistake and can cost you not only your smile, but your overall health and quality of life," Austin said.
For 2009, Austin urges patients not to stick with a dentist they don't enjoy visiting and to avoid using home remedies such as do-it-yourself teeth whitening kits.
People interested in maintain their dental health should brush their teeth before bed, use fluoride regularly, and to floss. Also, people should not attempt to mask chronic bad breath with gum or tongue strips, as this can be a sign of a more serious problem.
However, the number one mistake concerning dental care is to say "My teeth are fine. I don't need to see a dentists," according to Austin.
