Men are less likely to take good care of their dental health than women, according to the Academy of General Dentistry.
And yet dental health is just as important for males as for women - with men even more likely than their female counterparts to develop gum disease and oral cancer.
The AGD recommends that men see a dentist if they have any symptoms of periodontal disease, such as bleeding gums, swollen gums, persistent bad breath or loose teeth.
Gum disease arises when plaque on and between the teeth produces acids, which create periodontal pockets filled with bacteria.
Some of the factors which may put someone at higher risk of developing gum disease include smoking or chewing tobacco, diabetes, certain medications and improperly fitting bridges.
Tobacco use also raises your chances of developing oral and throat cancers.
According to the AGD, the average man will lose approximately 5.4 teeth by the time he is 72, while a smoking male will lose around 12 teeth by that age.
