Dentures 'require some adjustment'
Updated: 11/19/2008 6:00:35 PM

Dentures Dentures can be a great help to those who have suffered tooth loss, but they can also expect to face a period of adjustment when getting used to their new teeth.

According to the American Dental Association, when people first begin to wear dentures, it is normal for them to feel loose as the muscles in the mouth adjust to holding them in place.

Writing in the Statesman Journal, patient education coordinator Marcia Hays describes how even after this initial period of adjustment, denture-wearers sometimes encounter further dental care issues, most of which can be fixed by a dentist.

For example, a dentist or denturist is able to make sure the dentures fit properly. If they don't, they can be relined or repaired.

If this problem has been ruled out, Hayes suggests that the stability of the dentures may be the issue. In this case, dental implants may be required to improve biting pressure.

Dental implants may replace individual teeth, support bridges or serve as a foundation for dentures. Either full implants or mini-implants can be used.
