Teeth whitening has become a very popular choice for many people who want to brighten their smile.
However, the Academy of General Dentistry advises those who are thinking of bleaching their pearly whites that patients are likely to see the best results if they undergo the procedure under the supervision of a dentist.
AGD spokesperson Dr Myron J. Bromberg explained that consumers do not always know what they are purchasing when they buy teeth whitening products online, from TV infomercials or from a store.
Although these products are safe, he explained that people may not realize the results they desire.
"There is a wide range in results when using these products without supervision," Bromberg explained.
He said that some common mistakes is to use a bleaching agent that is too powerful or to leave it on the teeth for too long - both of which can produce "an unnatural, frosty look."
The American Dental Association also recommends visiting a dentist for consultation on teeth whitening, pointing out that certain colors of staining may not react well with bleach.
Some patients may be better off choosing veneers or dental bonding, the ADA states.
