Act fast to repair lost teeth, dentist says
Updated: 8/14/2008 4:00:33 PM

If a child gets their tooth knocked out due to a sports accident or similar incident, parents should act quickly to avoid complications, a dentist has advised.

Dr Gary Nelson told Syracuse's News 10 Now that ideally a tooth should be replaced "within 15 minutes" of an incident.

"After that [period of time], the socket where the tooth used to be fills up with blood and other fluids where you can't get it back in," he explained.

If it is not possible to get the tooth back in immediately, the parent should submerge it in milk - which contains minerals to keep the tooth healthy - and get to a dentist as soon as possible, Nelson said.

The dental professional will replace the tooth and stabilize it, either with orthodontic brackets and wire or a splint made from composite.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the use of protective sports gear could significantly reduce the number of dental-related injuries suffered by children each year.
