New technology to detect tooth decay
Updated: 7/23/2008 6:00:35 AM

Drilling and filling could be reduced thanks to the creation of fresh technology, one industry insider has stated this week.

Writing in the Society of Chemical Industry's Chemistry & Industry Magazine, Patrick Walter said that the fresh solutions, based on Raman spectroscopy, can locate optical fibre on a tooth, reports the A to Z of Materials.

Researchers at King's College London noted that chemical alteration in teeth may be spotted when looking at how light deflects when beamed on them.

One of the students working on the developments, Frances Downey, highlighted the benefits of such procedures and suggested that they could be valuable to family dentists.

"The earlier you spot decay the better as you can remineralize the area so there is no cavitation and therefore no need for a filling," he commented.

Healthier teeth can be spotted as the light is scattered in a different direction by bacteria, the academics argued.

Supervisor of the project Dr Frederic Festy added that he hopes further trials of the type of solution will go ahead in the coming months on human teeth, to assess its success.

Dentists in Ohio are beginning to use laser treatments that can kill bacteria that may lead to Periolase.ADNFCR-1507-ID-18696127-ADNFCR
