Dentists are beginning to use a revolutionary new laser treatment for gum (periodontal) disease, after it was approved recently by the Food and Drugs Agency (FDA).
Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) uses the PerioLase MVP-7, which is the only laser to receive FDA clearance for the procedure, timesnews.net reports.
The manufacturers of LANAP claim that it can be used to treat gingivitis and gingival bleeding, as well as to reduce the depth of the periodontal pocket, increase the level of tissue attachment and lessen instances of loose teeth.
Dentist Dr Richard Turner, who has recently begun using the new technology, told the news provider that clinical research has validated the effectiveness of LANAP as a treatment for gum disease that avoids the use of scalpels and sutures.
It also spoke to Dr Lloyd Tilt, a periodontist in Utah, who said: "This technique has virtually replaced osseous [traditional blade and bone] surgery for the treatment of periodontitis in my office. Superior clinical results, with a minimally invasive, non-traumatic procedure."
Gum disease is one of the most common oral health issues in the US and has been linked to a number of other problems, including heart disease, diabetes and premature labor.
