It is common knowledge nowadays that good dental care, such as regularly brushing and flossing, will help to keep teeth healthy.
However, what scientists are only just beginning to discover is that keeping gums healthy can help to prevent a number of serious illnesses, Health.org reports.
Gum disease, or periodontitis, is the leading cause of adult tooth loss, but recent research shows it can also contribute to illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and pneumonia.
Scientists believe the cause of the link may be bacteria from the mouth getting into the bloodstream.
The website recommends a number of measures for ensuring good dental health, including eating a diet high in calcium and vitamins C and D, brushing twice daily and seeing a dentist regularly.
It also suggests that those who smoke, or suffer for periodontal disease or diabetes, may need cleaning and checkups every three to four months.
Diane Melrose, chair of the University of Southern California's Dental Hygiene Program, recently recommended that people to look out for hidden sugars, such as those found in chewing gum, fruit juice, chips and even certain medicines.
