Diabetics 'need to communicate with their dentists'
Updated: 3/13/2008 4:05:25 PM

Dental patients who suffer from diabetes have been advised that they need to inform their practitioners of their condition to ensure they receive suitable care.

A study which appears in the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD's) peer-reviewed journal General Dentistry has stressed the importance of diabetics notifying dentists of their condition before they receive treatment as the medications that they are taking could interfere with the materials used during dental appointments.

The researchers estimate that more than 194 million people across the globe suffer from diabetes, and it is thought this figure could grow by two or three times in the next 20 years.

"It is imperative that diabetic patients inform their dentist of their needs in order to anticipate medication interactions and physical reactions to treatment," commented Dr. Lee Shackelford, a spokesperson for the AGD.

"The doctor must know if the patient is taking insulin, and has taken their daily dose of insulin, in order to anticipate the length of the appointment."

However, Dr. Shackelford went on to point out that it isn't only diabetics who should be talking openly with their dentists - it is all patients who are taking any sort of remedy, be it prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications or herbal drugs.

"Talk with your dentist if you are concerned about how the medications you are taking could affect your oral health," Dr. Shackelford advises.

"Open communication is the best way to ensure that your dentist gives you the best treatment possible."
