On the last day of October, roughly 700 to 800 local residents poured into the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena to receive free health and dental care, as part of the annual Care Harbor Clinic.
In addition to free, medical, dental and vision care, the four-day event aims to provide prevention resources and follow-up care to those without insurance or who are underinsured. Based on the first day's turnout, event organizers expected roughly 4,000 residents to turn up over the course of the weekend.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the first day of the event was largely dedicated to providing oral care for those with little or no dental insurance, with almost half of the arena space occupied by dental chairs. Apart from cleaning and examinations, information tables provided literature on health, prevention and insurance options.
A recent study from the National Academy for State Health Policy cited that roughly 85 million Americans do not have any kind of dental insurance. While private plans provided through employers make up the largest shares of providers, only 46 percent of workers have access to coverage, while only 36 percent take advantage of the plans offered to them.
