Kansas City Chiefs host day of dental care

While many children will have dental coverage under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, many still have no dental insurance and suffer from lack of proper dental care. TeamSmile and the Kansas City Chiefs teamed up to amend the problem last October by providing much-needed dental care for local kids.

The annual event is called Kansas City Oral Health Care Day, and to celebrate, more than 300 local children were brought to Arrowhead Stadium for dental screenings and procedures, ranging from teeth cleaning to X-rays to root canals. To provide such extensive treatment, local dentists closed their businesses and volunteered, while $500,000 worth of dental equipment transformed the stadium's clubroom into a dentist's office.

Activities, however, were not limited to basic dental procedures. Event organizers corralled doctors, insurers and dieticians to help provide basic dental health education. For the kids, there was also face painting, music, arts and crafts and a Play 60 station, which is designed to teach kids about the importance of eating right.

"When you think about the dentist as a kid you don't think of it as a fun place to go but we're here to distract them and make it a fun time," said Dexter McCluster, wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs. "There's a lot going on and they all seem to be having a good time."
