When people do not have dental insurance to give them access to affordable dental care, they may do some pretty crazy things. For instance, they may end up allowing a receptionist and an unqualified dental assistant to perform everything from root canals to applying braces. According to a recent article published by the Associated Press, two women working in a dental office were providing after-hours low-cost care to uninsured patients, even though they had no qualifications to do so.
Prosecutors say that the receptionist and the dental assistant treated at least three patients, but X-rays of others have shown that there could be many more. One individual said that he or she received a tooth extraction that was a painful 45-minute ordeal, and another said the receptionist was left to "find the root" during a root canal.
The American Dental Association has a firm stance that only dentists should be able to perform irreversible dental procedures. The organization does not even believe that dental therapists should be able to treat patients for complex oral issues without the supervision of a dentist.
Anyone without dental insurance should look into discount dental plans to help gain access to a dentist rather than turn to unqualified individuals to provide care.
