Hygienist makes house calls to elderly It's important for elderly individuals to pay close attention to their teeth. According to the American Dental Association, older adults have a higher risk of numerous dental health problems such as gum disease, dry mouth and tooth decay. Luckily, some dentists are willing to go the extra mile when it comes to helping the elderly get the care they need.

Recently, The Sacramento Bee reported on how registered dental hygienist Diann Azevedo regularly makes home visits to seniors to make sure they're keeping their teeth healthy.

The news source also spoke to Susan Lopez, president of the California Dental Hygienists' Association, who explained that it's important for elderly individuals to get regular dental care so they don't end up losing their teeth.

"We used to accept losing teeth as a part of aging. We don't accept that any more. The baby boomers will not accept that. And when people have dentures, everything has a plastic taste, everything you eat has a mouthful of plastic with it," Lopez told the news source.

Along with getting care from a dental health professional, eating right, brushing and flossing daily are also important steps for elderly individuals who want to keep their teeth.
