Many people have trouble accessing affordable dental care, especially the elderly individuals on Medicare. This is why these individuals should consider using a discount dental plan to help them afford the services they need. Recently, Mary Northridge, Ph.D., of New York University, was awarded a five-year, $3.7 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to analyze how elderly adults living in underserved communities in New York access oral health services.
Dentistry IQ reported on the grant, which is being given to Northridge in the hopes that she will gain a better understanding of how elderly individuals cope with all of the things that may keep them from accessing affordable healthcare.
"How the underserved group overcame barriers like lower education levels and higher poverty rates to successfully take advantage of dental services and achieve better oral health than the U.S. national average is an intriguing question," said Northridge, quoted by the news source.
According to WebMD, elderly individuals have an increased risk of experiencing a number of dental health problems such as dry mouth, darkened teeth, root decay and gum disease. This is why it's important for these individuals to have access to dental services.
