Common mistakes may be ruining your smile
Updated: 10/3/2012 6:59:43 PM

Common mistakes may be ruining your smile Many people think that brushing their teeth twice a day is all they have to do in order to have a healthy smile, but they're wrong. It's also essential to visit a dentist twice a year and floss daily to be in proper dental health. Not flossing daily or going to the dentist enough are just some of the common mistakes that people make that may be harming their teeth.

Recently, Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson Steven Ghareeb explained some of the other things that people do that may be keeping them from having healthy teeth.

For example, many people think they should brush after every meal, but brushing right after eating sodas or citrus fruits may actually do more harm than good by helping acids attack tooth enamel. Furthermore, the American Dental Association only recommends brushing teeth twice a day.

Also, Ghareeb said that many people over-bleach their teeth using at-home whitening kits. He said that this can cause the teeth to become sensitive and look unnaturally white, which is why it's always important to consult a dentist before using these products.

Finally, many people wait too long to replace their toothbrushes. Remember, a toothbrush needs to be changed out every three months.
