Everyone should make dental health a priority, but unfortunately many people who do not have dental insurance skip trips to the dentist due to the cost. Discount dental plans can help these individuals gain access to the care they need at affordable prices, which makes them something elderly people, in particular, should look into.
Not only do a large amount of elderly Americans rely on Medicaid, which may not provide them with all the dental services they need, but this population is also more prone to oral health problems.
"Aging baby boomers and seniors, and their care providers, should be paying as much attention to their oral care as they do to their cholesterol, skin quality, blood pressure and overall fitness," said Susan Lopez, president of the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA).
Dry mouth, in particular, is one oral health condition that elderly people should be wary of. Insufficient saliva production can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth and an increased risk of cavities.
The CDHA stressed that losing teeth is not a normal part of aging. With a proper dental health regimen and regular trips to the dentist, people can keep their natural teeth for the rest of their lives.
