Maintaining proper dental health can be difficult for a lot of people, but it can be especially hard on individuals with special needs. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are more likely to have poor dental hygiene than those without these problems.
Recently, NECN reported on celebrity dentist John Meola, who cares for both football stars and special needs patients. According to the news source, the dentist was inspired to offer dental services to special needs individuals after seeing young people from The Feingold Center for Children - which helps kids with birth defects - and learning that the minimal dental care they received was not enough.
"Seeing the hell they've been through in their lives in 20, 30 operations and to see them smiling, happy and living," Meola told NECN. "It just gives you a whole different perspective about when you're having a bad day or you're feeling sorry for yourself, you don't feel too bad about things."
It's important to make sure that all special needs patients get the care they need. Individuals with disabilities who are underinsured should look into discount dental plans.
