How important are regular trips to a dental health professional? So important that even some of the earliest humans understood that teeth need to be taken care of. According to a recent study published in the open access journal PLOS ONE, there is now evidence that individuals were receiving dental treatments as early as 6,500 years ago.
Federico Bernardini and Claudio Tuniz, researchers from the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy, discovered a 6,500-year-old human jawbone that contained a tooth that appeared to have a filling made of beeswax. While they can't tell for sure if the filling was placed before or after the person's death, the scientists stated that if it was placed before death, it was likely to reduce pain from cracked enamel.
"This finding is perhaps the most ancient evidence of pre-historic dentistry in Europe and the earliest known direct example of therapeutic-palliative dental filling so far,"said Bernardini.
Of course, today, the cost of a dental filling can be extensive without dental insurance. This is why individuals without coverage should consider purchasing discount dental plans to help them find affordable care.
