Wrigley donates $100K to keep kids chewing
Updated: 2/20/2008 12:05:42 PM

In honor of the National Children's Dental Health Month this month, the Wrigley Jr. Company has donated $100,000 plus ten percent of its February gross sales so that kids can keep chewing the gum that keeps their teeth clean.

Sugar-free gum including Orbit, Extra and Eclipse will be donated under the Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program spearheaded by the American Dental Association (ADA).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of children aged five to 17 years old in the U.S., yet this condition is largely preventable by taking proper care of teeth with regular dental check-ups and a regular dental regimen.

Paul Chibe, vice president of North American Gum Marketing for Wrigley, said that Orbit, Extra and Eclipse became the "first and only" chewing gum brands in the country to earn the ADA Seal of Excellence for dental health.

"For nearly 20 years Wrigley has championed the oral health benefits of chewing gum by sharing extensive clinical research results with dental professionals and consumers around the world," he said.

The ADA is the nation's largest dental association and represents more than 155,000 dentist members and has been a resource for education and public health since 1859.
