What dental procedures require an anesthetic?
Visit a Dentist in your Area for Additional Information on Anesthesia and Sedation Dentistry

A dental procedure often becomes difficult to manage if a patient cannot withstand pain or is extremely apprehensive about dental procedures. Anxiety levels and pain can be greatly reduced with the help of sedatives and anesthetics. Dental surgeons have a wide variety of anesthetics to choose from. These include pain-killing analgesics, anesthetics and sedatives. These sedatives may be administered intravenously and also through inhalation.

With advanced technology and equipment, modern therapy makes it easier for the dental patient to have a comfortable surgery. Complex procedures are typically performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to minimize any form of discomfort experienced by the patient.

When any form of anesthetic is used, the patient feels a loss of all bodily senses. However, there are certain kinds of anesthetics that keep the patient alert and conscious, so that they can follow the dentist’s instructions during a procedure. A dental patient may be administered a sedative that numbs the mouth tissues and sometimes, makes the patient unconscious for a certain period of time. This is usually done in order to relieve pain or make the patient comfortable during the whole process. Local anesthesia is used in procedures like dental fillings, root canal treatments, dental crowns application and tooth extractions. An anesthetic is also usually recommended when treating periodontal disease or any kind of surgery that involves pain and discomfort.

Local anesthesia is used for small processes like a tooth extraction where the dentist has to work in a particular region of the mouth. In this process, the dentist uses a syringe to inject a chemical solution into a specific area. This may be the region around the gums or the inner cheek where the procedure is about to take place. A topical anesthetic is often applied to the area before an anesthetic is injected to numb the site of injection. This is done to relieve any pain caused by a needle piercing the soft tissue of the mouth.

The procedures that involve general anesthesia often include more complex surgeries that require a patient to be completely asleep. This may also be used in cases involving children or patients with dentophobia. Dental patients may also include individuals who have emotional or physical disabilities. When patients are supposed to undergo a long surgery they are often advised their dentists to permit the use of general anesthesia. Before a dental surgery, the patient needs to be fully aware of the procedure that he is about to undergo which also reduces anxiety levels.

The dental care professional will thoroughly explain the complete process and discuss the several steps involved in the surgery. The surgeon will also inform you about the type of anesthetic or sedative that is best suited for you. Clinicians will also explain all the details about how the patient might feel after the anesthetic or sedative has been administered.
