Are You Too Big For Yoga?
Health System
Updated: 5/26/2005 5:27:37 PM

"BIG YOGA" is a system of Hatha Yoga that is designed for plus size people who may want to try yoga, but might not go to a regular class because of their size. You don't have to be thin to enjoy the benefits of yoga! The "Big Yoga" video was reviewed in "Yoga Journal" and creator Meera Patricia Kerr was also interviewed in Integral Yoga Magazine.

WHY YOGA FOR BIG PEOPLE?

With healthy diet and regular yoga practice, you can be fit even if overweight!

· The majority of U.S. adults are not physically active at levels that can promote health.

· 95% of people who go on a diet gain the weight back, usually with a few more pounds added.

· Obesity is an epidemic in the US & health risks of obesity can be reduced by yoga practice.

· CDC reports that the yearly medical cost of obesity in 2003 was $75 billion

· 1.3 million cases of diabetes are diagnosed each year (Kilo Diabetes & Vascular Research Foundation)

Why should we focus on fitness rather than fatness?

Are you ever too big for Yoga?

Can only young people do Yoga? Are you ever too old for Yoga?

What are the first steps to integrating Yoga into your life?

Yoga has been proven to lower blood pressure, heart rate, blood glucose levels, and cholesterol. Studies show that yoga can increase circulation, improve the ability to cope with stress, and boost the immune system and enhance mood. Yoga improves physical fitness, including muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body composition, pulmonary function, glycemic control, and nerve function in Type 2 diabetes.

What is Yoga? Yoga is a mindful, low-exertion activity causing minimal cardiovascular and musculoskeletal strain, and has been shown to lower anxiety, enhance well being, and improve mood, in one single session. The word Yoga means Union or Merging. Yoga involves the use of movement, sound current, breath & meditation. It helps relax & heal a person's mind & body, allowing your spirit to flow more freely. This in turn brings about a greater feeling of well being & happiness.

Why Yoga? Hatha Yoga is a great way to recharge your body. It is quick, it is fast, and it stimulates the nervous & immune systems, improves strength & flexibility, as it centers the mind & opens the spirit.

Meera Patricia Kerr, creator of the video BIG YOGA has been teaching yoga for over 25 years, and is certified to teach Integral Yoga Hatha 1, Cardiac Yoga, Extra Gentle Yoga, and Big Yoga. Meera Patricia Kerr spent many years living in the rich spiritual environment of the Yogaville Ashram under the close guidance of teacher, Sri Swami Satchidananda, the Indian yoga master famous for opening Woodstock by chanting peace chants.
