Don't forget your teeth during spring cleaning

Spring is here, which is a time when people start to think about spring cleaning. While individuals are clearing out their homes and garages, they may want to use this time to make sure their teeth and mouths are clean as well. Here are some tips to help people improve their dental health before spring ends and summer comes along.

First, people need the right tools in order to improve their oral care. This means having a toothbrush that is no more than three months old, a toothpaste that contains fluoride, floss, mouthwash and a tongue scraper. All of these devices work together to get rid of plaque and leftover food particles that can cause cavities.

Of course, none of these tools matter if they're not being used correctly. People should be brushing their teeth two or three times a day, and flossing at least once. Flossing gets bacteria out from between teeth, and removes plaque from the face of the teeth. If plaque is not removed, it can harden and stretch the gum pockets, which may lead to periodontal disease.

Finally, people should be visiting their dentist at least twice a year, so if individuals who went last summer or fall may want to think about scheduling another check-up soon.
