Smokers are less likely to visit the dentist  

Of the many habits that can damage a person's oral health, smoking is one of the worst. According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use is a primary cause of many oral diseases, such as oral cancer and periodontal disease. Recently, a report conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that even though smokers have a higher risk of dental problems, they tend to visit the dentist less often than non-smokers.

The report, which followed more than 16,000 adults aged between 18 and 64,found that smokers at a greater risk of developing oral health problems, and they don't seem to be doing anything about it. Researchers found that one-third of smokers experience problems,such as gum infections, toothaches, stained teeth and jaw pain.

People who use tobacco products were twice as likely to experience these dental health issues than non-smokers. The survey found that one in five smokers had not visited the dentist in the last five years, compared to one in 10 non-smokers.

Half of the smokers surveyed cited an inability to pay as the many reason they don't go to the dentist. These individuals should consider looking into discount dental plans to find affordable oral care.
