Even with a lack of insurance, dentist visits should still be a priority

A Gallup-Healthways survey of more than 170,000 Americans found that 35 percent had not visited a dentist in the past 12 months.  

Since the recession has left many individuals without dental insurance, Americans have been visiting the dentist more infrequently. In response to this, the Pennsylvania Dental Association has released a statement encouraging people to make oral care a priority, as it is connected to overall health, and ignoring it can result in costly procedures.

"When a patient is not seen at a regular three-month, four-month or six-month intervals, problems are left to progress, which leads to more expensive treatments such as crowns, root canals or periodontal surgeries," said Tamara Brady, D.D.S., a PDA member dentist in Exton.

A Gallup-Healthways survey of more than 170,000 Americans found that 35 percent had not visited a dentist in the past 12 months.

Brady added a few helpful tips for keeping teeth clean in-between dental visits. First, she said that sugary drinks should only be consumed with meals, and that water is the best drink or when a person is thirsty. Also, brush teeth with a soft toothbrush and a paste containing fluoride at least twice a day.
