New device takes the pain out of fillings

The tool actually changes the surface of the teeth, enhancing a tooth  

Individuals who have had a filling replaced know that it can be an unpleasant experience. The Dental Fears Research Clinic at the University of Washington in Seattle states that anxiety over visiting the dentist is common, and most people fear having a painful experience. Recently, researchers from the University of Missouri invented a device that may eliminate the pain of replacing a filling.

Health Canal reported on the "plasma brush," which uses chemical reactions to clean out cavities for fillings. The tool actually changes the surface of the teeth, enhancing a tooth's ability to bond with filling material. Along with being painless, the device will also be cost-efficient, the researchers believe.

In all, "200 million tooth restorations cost Americans an estimated $50 billion a year, and it is estimated that replacement fillings comprise 75 percent of a dentist’s work. The plasma brush would help reduce those costs," said researcher Hao Li, quoted by the news source.

The device has not yet been tested on humans or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but trials are set to take place in early 2012.
