Reasons to keep dental health in mind during cancer treatment

Thomas Moffat, D.D.S. told the news source that good oral health allows for good nutrition, which is very important for cancer patients. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, more than one-third of people who undergo cancer treatment develop oral health problems as a result of head and neck radiation or chemotherapy. Recently PennLive.com ran an article explaining the importance of keeping dental health in mind when a person has been diagnosed with cancer. 

Thomas Moffat, D.D.S. told the news source that good oral health allows for good nutrition, which is very important for cancer patients.

“Mouth ulcerations and sores are probably the most common side effect I see from chemotherapy. People don’t want to brush or rinse because of the pain, but that only sets the stage for more irritation to set in if bacteria is not brushed or rinsed or flossed away,” said Moffat, quoted by the news provider.

Dentists recommended that cancer patients make appointments with their doctor soon after they begin treatment, to get the advice and care they'll need during this time. There are also several products available to ease dry mouth, a common side effect of cancer treatment.
