Death from dental infection highlights the need for more affordable care

Representatives from the California Dental Hygienists Many people do not realize how serious a dental health problem can be until it is too late. Recently, an unemployed Ohio man died because he could afford antibiotics for his tooth infection, which ultimately spread throughout his body and killed him. This shines light on the need for more education and affordable dental care in the U.S. 

Representatives from the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA) said that people need to be aware of this tragedy to encourage them to pay proper attention to the health of their teeth.

"Unfortunately, many people still view oral care as an optional cosmetic service even though the mouth is the mirror of health and disease and the entry point for a lot of bacteria into our body," said CDHA president Lisa Okamoto.

Okamoto and her colleagues offered some other facts to the public so they can understand that oral decay is a silent epidemic in this country. For example, one in five American children receive no dental care. Also, it costs an estimated $33 million a year to treat people who wait to get a problem with their teeth taken care of at the emergency room.
