Addressing the fears of those wary of receiving dental exams While having a certain wariness of the dentist is not necessarily uncommon, some individuals have a genuine fear of the necessary processes behind dental health care. As a result, they avoid going for regular dental exams, which can lead to serious oral health issues in the future.

According to Cosmetic Dentistry Guide, a new study in the British Dental Journal intended to address this issue may have found a solution to the problem of dental phobia. A total of 60 patients, with serious fears of the dentist so palpable they required sedation before check-ups, were recruited to test the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in abating these individuals' oral health-related hesitance.

The final results of the study stated that CBT in as minimal an amount as a single session could significantly lower the fears of any patients with dental phobia. To reach this conclusion, researchers offered CBT sessions to half of the 60-patient group. Of the 21 individuals who accepted this offer and underwent the therapeutic process, all but one of them eventually went on to receive dental care without a sedative.

According to the American Dental Association, although brushing and flossing regularly are essential to maintaining optimal oral health, they must be supplemented by periodic visits to a dentist.
