Researchers discover potential way to speed recovery time following dental implants

A new method may help dentists determine the best surface area for dental implants Some people avoid certain dental procedures because they do not have time in their schedules to accommodate recovery periods. However, researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden recently found that studying the surface of dental implants may help them understand how to reduce healing times following implant procedures.

"Increasing the active surface at nano level and changing the conductivity of the implant allows us to affect the body's own biomechanics and speed up the healing of the implant. This would reduce the discomfort for patients and make for a better quality of life during the healing process," said lead researcher Johanna Loberg.

She explained that titanium is used in implants to promote bone growth around the new tooth, and this material is coated with oxide, which determines how well this process occurs.

The study's results showed that a larger, rough surface area was key to a speedier recovery after receiving dental implants. Therefore, the scientists devised a method to estimate the optimal topography of these titanium parts.

They said that their tool may help develop new methods to speed bone growth and healing.
