Survey: Nearly half of seniors delay medical, dental care due to financial strain

Nationwide financial problems may affect the oral health of older individuals A recent survey conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Public Policy Institute found that the economic recession has hit older Americans hard, especially in terms of dental care.

The poll found that between December 2007 and June 2009 - which was considered to be the end of the recession - one out of every four older workers used up all of his or her retirement funds, according to an article published by the Huffington Post.

The newspaper reported that more than 49 percent of the respondents who were over the age of 50 indicated that they delayed medical or dental care because they could not afford treatment.

These findings may be particularly worrisome since aging individuals typically require extra dental care to maintain a healthy smile and correct age-related oral health problems.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 60 percent of Americans over the age of 60 have visited a dentist within the past year.

This may prevent older individuals from obtaining dentures, which many seniors require in order to chew food and speak properly.
