Dentists are providing more dentures for young people

Young people may require dentures early in life if their natural teeth erode due to drug use or poor oral hygiene People often associate dentures with old age, but Texas-based KSLA 12 News recently reported that dentists are beginning to see more and more young people who require these false sets of teeth.

One 27-year-old Nacogdoches resident, Victoria Hutto, is one of these denture-clad young people. She told the news provider about the embarrassment of having decayed teeth.

"I trained myself. When I yawned or coughed - when I did anything - I immediately covered my mouth. [My teeth] were like chalk. I could take a bite of a potato chip and part of my tooth would come off with it," she explained to the news source.

Hutto attributed her poor dental health to insufficient oral hygiene and eating or drinking too many sugary foods and beverages. However, dentist Kyle Ferro said that a growing number of young adults require dentures due to the harmful effects of drug use, especially of methamphetamine.

He told the news organization about a condition known as "meth mouth." Individuals who use the drug develop this problem when they do not produce enough saliva, which eventually leads to tooth decay.

The American Dental Association states that people who wear dentures must still brush their gums and tongues two times daily.
