Tennessee woman receives a $30,000 smile
Updated: 4/26/2011 6:59:59 PM

Some people may underestimate the value of a healthy smile Tennessee resident Kayla Pocan recently won $30,000 worth of dental treatments after she was voted the most deserving candidate for Nashville’s Most Wanted Smiles Contest, according to a recent article published by the Tennessean.

Pocan told the newspaper that she received braces when she was 14-years old, but her mother became unemployed soon afterwards and the adolescent no longer had access to orthodontic care. By the time Pocan won the contest eight years later, her teeth had developed brown spots and were severely misaligned, the news provider explained.

In order to provide the now 23-year-old with a perfect smile, Old Hickory-based dentist Michael Atchley treated her with 12 crowns, two bridges, two veneers and numerous fillings, the news source reported.

"I get so excited about brushing. It’s just so wonderful. I play in front of the mirror, posing and smiling while I brush," Pocan told the newspaper.

Among 172 million Americans who have health insurance, an estimated 45 million lack dental coverage, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The organization notes that the prevalence of insurance is an effective indicator of the number of people who receive dental treatment, since few are able to afford out-of-pocket costs for these types of procedures.
