Dentists attempt to bring absent patients back
Updated: 3/30/2011 7:00:01 PM

Some dentists are extending their hours and offering discounts to lessen the financial burden of dental care After witnessing the recession's toll on patients' oral care, some dentists are using new strategies to encourage them to seek necessary checkups and procedures, according to a recent article published in the Chicago Sun-Times.

The news source reported that some area dentists are extending their hours into the night and weekend, while others are offering free services or discounts to patients who have avoided dental work due to financial constraints.

Dentist Kaz Zymantas told the news provider that he and four of his colleagues spent one day during each of the past two months treating visitors at no cost.

“A lot of people are putting [dental care] off, hoping they get that job, hoping insurance will kick in, hoping something will change to make it easier for them,” Naperville dentist Beata Lezerkiewicz said.

She also told the Sun-Times that her practice is offering a benefits program for patients, which foots the bill for routine screenings and offers service discounts.

According to the American Dental Association, the economic recession resulted in a dental spending decrease of more than five percent between 2008 and 2009.
