New movie provides dental health education and entertainment

Learning about dental care can be entertaining and informative The new short film, Crooked, focuses on encouraging adolescents to maintain good dental hygiene without constant reminders.

The 12-year-old character Samantha relates to older children and young teens who may still rely on their parents for dental care instruction.

Throughout Samantha's mission to obtain the perfect smile, she encourages viewers to brush and floss their teeth regularly, and enjoy visits to the dentist.

Dentist and executive producer Steven Tinsworth said the film may help get kids into the habit of taking care of their teeth.

"After all, kids who form good habits now grow into adults with healthy teeth," he added.

The film can be used by dentists, parents and school systems to educate children and help prevent the negative effects of poor dental health early in life.

Children lost over 51 million hours of school due to dental illnesses in 2009, according to the American Dental Association (ADA).

In Greenville, South Carolina, the ADA reported that 45 percent of children had not seen a dentist at any point during 2009, mainly due to lack of health insurance. Moreover, 40 percent of the population that did have health insurance did not have dental coverage.
