Children can learn about dental health through playful technology

Establishing dental-care routines early can pay off A new learning tablet for children will serve as a source of entertainment and provide kids with lessons in arithmetic, writing and personal care, such as dental health.

LeapFrog Enterprises’ LeapPad Explorer is an interactive device that engages children in classroom and home-based learning and enlivens everyday tasks such as brushing their teeth.

Before kids are old enough to take learning into their own hands, parents can initiate a lifestyle of good dental health for them.

Parents can save money by taking their children to the dentist as babies, according to an article on PennLive.com. A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, showed that children who had visited the dentist before they were 1 year old had 40 percent lower dental costs in their first five years than children who had not.

Some techniques for preparing young children for dental care include using an infant toothbrush to clean their gums, or dabbing a very small amount of toothpaste on their gums, so that they become familiar with the taste of toothpaste. Parents should brush their children’s teeth until they are at least 5 years old, especially before bed.
