The Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) offers dental care tips to parents

Pennsylvania Dental Association raises dental health awareness for parents The PDA is providing parents with information critical to their children’s dental health in light of February being National Children’s Dental Health Month.

It is essential that parents stress the importance of good dental health to their children at an early age, according to the PDA.

The dental association recommends kids brush their teeth twice a day, for approximately two minutes per cleaning. For parents who want to ensure their kids are brushing the PDA states, “Try setting an egg timer or listening to a song.” Also, kids should floss at least once a day to remove any hard-to-reach food or buildup.
Brushing and flossing are necessities for preventing cavities and dental problems early in life.

Over 40 percent of children ages 2 to 11 have dental caries, also known as plaque or cavities, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and over 20 percent of children have untreated caries.

Decay becomes more serious as children grow older, because the caries exist in their adult teeth. Positive training and education in dental health practices can help save kids from painful and costly corrective procedures in the future.
