Children’s book promotes diligent dental care
Updated: 2/10/2011 7:00:07 PM

New children A new book called “The Sugarbug Hunter” encourages kids to brush and floss regularly, so the “sugarbugs” left behind from food and candy do not cause one of the most common dental hygiene faux pas - cavities.

The author, Deserie Yeager, has worked in the dental field for more than 10 years and said she has seen the negative effects of bad dental hygiene in children.

“In addition to causing bad breath and severe dental problems, bad dental hygiene can cause health issues down the road,” Yeager said.

The playful, rhyming book was inspired by her son, Hunter, and focuses on a sugarbug nightmare. After the nightmare, Hunter, also the name of the character in the book, devises a plan to brush and floss regularly, especially after eating chewy candy, so that he won’t have to worry about sugarbugs causing cavities in his teeth.

“My mission is to educate and inspire young children to take better care of their teeth,” the author added.

Studies have shown that 24 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 9 who use a toothpaste containing fluoride have less decay and damage to their teeth than those who use a non-fluoride toothpaste.
