Older adults can maintain optimal health through rigorous dental care

Seniors may face a number of complicated dental health issues. Seniors may face a number of hurdles in achieving proper dental care. 

Potential medical issues may compromise their oral health. Having diabetes, for example, causes a high rate of gum disease, caused by high blood sugar levels, according to the National Institutes of Health website.

Good oral health is imperative for sustained overall health. A study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association notes that high concentrations of pathogens from dental plaque in the elderly were directly linked to cases of pneumonia.

"Oral health is connected to overall health. And we're just starting to increase our knowledge of the relationship," notes Maggie Kriger of the Whatcome County Oral Health Coalition, recently speaking to the The Bellingham Herald.

As many seniors must pay out of pocket for their dental appointments, their needs can be uniquely complicated. Regular dentist visits are essential for diagnosing and treating tooth and gum issues from the outset.

Community dental clinics, which offer dentist services at a cut rate, can be one solution for seniors, the Herald reports.
