New research shows that pregnant women can be safely treated for gum disease Women who are pregnant and suffer from gum disease may want to improve their oral health as new research shows this dental problem can be safely treated.

Reuters reports that a new study, published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, looked at 322 pregnant women who had developed gum disease. The goal of the study was to discover if there is a link between premature births and receiving treatment for this health problem

Each participant was randomly assigned to either receive aggressive teeth cleaning treatments and education about their dental hygiene or only engage in these informational sessions. In fact, the researchers found that the risk for early delivery was reduced in the subjects who were treated and cured of their gum disease, the news provider reports.

Women may find it important to maintain proper oral hygiene throughout their pregnancy as gum disease can lead to other health risks, such as diabetes or low-weight births, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
