Schools receive funding to provide better dental care

Schools receive funding to provide better dental care Federal funding is increasing so that students who are enrolled in dental programs can provide more services to individuals who need oral care.

The State reports that the Medical University of South Carolina will receive a $1.7 million grant so that the school can restart a graduate dental program, which had been previously shutdown. The students are expected to provide affordable dental care throughout South Carolina.

Individuals who are enrolled in this program - set to start again next year - will also treat special-needs patients by using the school's dental facility.

John Sander's, the school's dean, told the newspaper that when the program was first suspended, many patients in the surrounding area had no where to go to receive dental care. He adds that the "economy has gotten worse since then," and there are "more people in this category."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 15 million Americans are unemployed.
