Experts: Dental care is vital for children  

In these tough economic times, many families have been forced to drop their dental insurance. While this may save them some money each month, it may cost them more down the road in expensive procedures to treat major dental health problems. Children are especially at risk.

In an effort to educate a greater number of pediatricians about ways that they can help these children avoid serious dental problems, Laurie Turner, a pediatric dental expert for Going Miles for Healthy Smiles, recently addressed a group of doctors in Auburn, New York.

She told them that they should be checking their younger patients for oral problems as well illnesses in the rest of the body, and that they should refer patients to dental experts if they find evidence of tooth decay or gum disease, according to the Auburn Citizen.

"If you don't have a healthy mouth, you don't have a healthy body," she said, as quoted by the news source. "We know children are not seeing dentists right now."
