Parents say teaching dental health in school is vital

Parents are the first role models from whom their children can learn proper dental hygiene. However, many parents recognize that their efforts to instill good habits in their offspring can only go so far. According to a new survey, many parents look to their children's school to reinforce the importance of dental health.

The survey, which was conducted by Oral Health America, found that 65 percent of parents say that it is extremely important for schools to teach kids about the importance of taking care of their teeth.

Beth Truett, president of Oral Health America, said that schools could see better student performance if they begin teaching children about dental health. Tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease in the U.S., and children lose more than 51 million school hours to the condition each year.

"If we want our children to be in school, ready to learn, both parents and schools have a vested interest in working in partnership with dental care providers to teach good habits that will last a lifetime, and keep teeth and mouths healthy," she said.
