Mission of Mercy event treats more than Virginia dental patients

Mission of Mercy event treats more than Virginia dental patients The Virginia Dental Health Foundation recently hosted the Mission of Mercy Project, which helped provide free dental care services to more than 1,400 residents. Foundation officials report that volunteers provided treatments worth a total of $1.4 million, according to SWVAToday.com.

During the three-day event, patients received dental services that included oral exams, cleanings, root canals, tooth extractions, x-rays and mold dentures. Dental specialists also distributed free toothbrushes and informed attendees about at-home preventative methods, the news source reports.

Nathan Houchins, a Virginia-based dentist and event volunteer, stated that "some of these patients have been in pain for months and the only relief they get is to go to the emergency room for medication." He added that "it's very rewarding to help those in need who can't afford treatment."

Similar campaigns may help lower the number of people with poor oral hygiene who are unable to see a dentist on a regular basis. Only 63 percent of all Americans aged 18 to 64 years visited a dentist in 2007, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Individuals and families with little or no dental insurance can also benefit from discount dental plans. These programs can help patients visit dentists on a regular basis and receive services that can prevent further oral complications.
