Special needs adolescents at higher risk of developing dental complications

Special needs adolescents at higher risk of developing dental complications A study recently published by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) has found that children who are diagnosed with special health needs are at higher risk of developing oral disease. By releasing this report, researchers are encouraging dentists to take more preventative steps when providing these patients with dental care.

Because of daily medications and specific diets, previous observations have found that children with behavioral issues, developmental disorders, cognitive complications, genetic disorders and systemic illnesses may not receive the appropriate amount of dental care.

For instance, many parents use sugar-sweetened syrups to administer medications to their children. The syrups can stick to teeth and cause cavities. Also, some special needs patients' dietary regimens may include increased amounts of certain nutrients, such as carbohydrates, which can lead to teeth demineralization.

"Children should continue with the diet and medications as directed by their physician, but a dentistmay recommend more frequent applications of fluoridated toothpaste and mouthrinse and rinsing with water to decrease the risk of decay," said Vincent Mayher, a spokesperson for AGD.

Parents of special needs children with little or no dental insurance can benefit from researching discount dental plans, which can allow their kids too see a dentist regularly and receive preventative treatments.
