North Carolina dental program director receives Local Hero award

North Carolina dental program director receives Local Hero award The Boys and Girls Club in Hendersonville, North Carolina has announced Bill Stokes Jr. as this year's Local Hero award recipient, which honors an active member of the community who has made a difference in society. In 1995, Stokes launched a program that worked towards providing dental care to local families who had little or no insurance, according to the Citizen Times.

When the campaign was first established, Stokes and several other active members of the community opened a two-room dental clinic for underserved patients. Now, the William F. Stokes Jr. Dental Center has 10 exam rooms and a full staff who assist dental patients in need of free services, the news source reports.

Stokes began the campaign to help local children who were suffering from baby bottle tooth decay, which led to many young patients need surgical procedures to correct the dental problems.

Stokes is "really at the forefront in this community in terms of recognizing how important access to dental care is and the community needed to do something about it," Milton Butterworth, community relations director at the dental center, told the news source.

In addition to his dental prevention campaign, in 1996, Stokes Jr. launched the Etowah Valley Charity Pro-Am, which has raised more than $300,000 in funding to benefit the Boys and Girls Club and the dental clinic.
